We take our Australian wines very seriously at Richmond Hill Wines. Our focus has always been boutique, high quality producers that showcase the premium old vineyards that Australia is blessed with. Over the years we have also had the distinct privilege of getting to know many of these producers on a personal level, and none more so than our good friend Ben Glaetzer.
Ben began his winemaking career at a very young age, and over the last 20 years he has matured into one of the top winemakers and wine personalities in South Australia. Ben's iconic Amon Ra Shiraz consistently ranks among the best wines of any given vintage, and the 2016 vintage is no exception. Ben sources his fruit from the historic Ebenezer district of the Barossa Valley, and he produces 4 wines that encompass the unique terroir of the Northern Barossa.
When listening to Ben describe the 2016 vintage in the Barossa Valley, you can hear the excitement in his voice. Every few decades a vintage comes along that defines a region, and that may be the case with the 2016 vintage in South Australia. Spring rainfall was adequate, and the summer months were warm and dry. This led to optimal growing conditions that afforded winemakers and viticulturists the luxury of waiting for optimal ripeness before picking. Yields were abundant, and many wineries had trouble finding tank and barrel space for the amount of high quality fruit that was coming in from the vineyards. This is always a good problem to have. The result was decadent and intense fruit with perfect acidity and sugar levels.
